<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Raw Tuscan cabbage salad</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I eat a lot of salad. And when I say <i>a lot</i>, I mean <b>A LOT</b>. Whilst I love my trusty favourite, occasionally I stray into adventure-land and try something different.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tuscan cabbage</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I use a lot of Tuscan cabbage for my green juices, so thought I'd give it a run in a salad. Tuscan cabbage, is known as Cavolo Nero in Italy and is also known as black cabbage or Tuscan kale.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga-pIG9vGr-q_BYdxWVB8Ulka6A4MZr7YlW624rsV_S29N-mItXXKUDcYfc36FGBM5ak63TDBra8dvPiadxIgvhkKjt1w57QUTOFeZLVzuWB4lu6HRz6cQMwXReqPStmiScl8pFQ1szj7O/s1600/TuscanCabbage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga-pIG9vGr-q_BYdxWVB8Ulka6A4MZr7YlW624rsV_S29N-mItXXKUDcYfc36FGBM5ak63TDBra8dvPiadxIgvhkKjt1w57QUTOFeZLVzuWB4lu6HRz6cQMwXReqPStmiScl8pFQ1szj7O/s1600/TuscanCabbage.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tuscan cabbage is actually a type of kale and has long, narrow, wrinkled leaves which are very firm. It has a rich and astringent, mild cabbage flavour and its amazing versatility makes it equally at home in a soup or in a salad such as ours.<br /><br />With it's dark green leaves, it is full of antioxidants and are low in calories and high in fibre, which is great at preventing Western diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. We should eat (or drink) more green leafy veggies, and eating Tuscan cabbage raw in a salad is a perfect way of doing this whilst retaining all the fibre.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ingredients</span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/2 bunch Tuscan cabbage</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2 cups peas, cooked</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Handful of mint leaves, shredded</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Olive oil</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Aged balsamic (I used Pukara pomegranate balsamic)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sale to taste</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Method</span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Finely shred cabbage leaves and mint leaves. Cook peas and combine with cabbage and mint. Dress salad with balsamic or lemon and oil season to taste.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /><b>Choc chia chomps</b></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is another recipe in my quest to satisfy my seemingly never-ending quest for something sweet and something chocolatey, but not being evil. These little guys really fit the bill! Not only are they nutritious, but they're darned tasty as well and will answer most chocolate cravings.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Raw cashews</b> supply healthy fats and numerous minerals. More than 70 percent of the fat in raw cashews is heart-healthy unsaturated fat. They also contain protein which is essential for the growth and repair of the body's tissues.</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Dates</b> are power houses nutrition that also satisfy a sweet tooth and provide natural sugar for this treat. Dates are loaded with fibre, both soluble and insoluble and are an excellent source of potassium and many other vitamins & minerals. </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Chia seeds</b> contain the highest natural percentage of Omega-3 essential fatty acid known to man (60-64%). Not only that but chia are a powerful source of antioxidants and unlike most other sources of Omega-3, do not need to be refrigerated to maintain freshness. They're also high in protein and contain 3 times more iron than spinach. We can see why chia seeds are now becoming very popular, especially as they have very little flavour.</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Ingredients </b></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 cup cashews </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3 tablespoons creamed coconut </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5 tbsp raw cacao </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5 dates </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 tsp cinnamon </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3 tbsp coconut nectar </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/4 cup coconut oil </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2 tbsp chia seeds </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Method</b></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Pulverize cashews in food processor until very finely ground (although a few small bits are fine). <span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That's possibly an overstatement, but here at ChocolateObsessed.com, we reckon we've tried and tested enough chocolate to know what's good and what goes straight in the wheelie bin.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This uses our <a href="http://yourlocalmarkets.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/raw-vegan-chocolate.html" target="_blank">raw vegan chocolate recipe</a> as the base, but then simply adds a cup of chopped/ground almonds (whizzed in a food processor, but not too long, keep some chunks in there) and 1/2 cup sultanas or dates. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That recipe again is:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/2 cup coconut oil, melted on low heat on the stove</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 1/3 cups raw cacao, sifted and stirred into the melted coconut oil</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4-6 tablespoons organic raw coconut nectar/syrup</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Add the nuts and fried fruit; spread onto a baking tray; freeze for 5-10 minutes, cut into squares; freeze again for about 20 minutes or until hard. Pop into a container and keep in the fridge or freezer.</span>Your Local Marketshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16430960250389947289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565887263191578181.post-52332112103469551632012-09-27T12:21:00.000+10:002012-09-27T12:21:01.314+10:00Fresh from the Snowy<br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
Before you change channels, the only political thing about this blog post will be contained in the statement that George Bush Snr did a massive disservice to humble broccoli.</span><div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He doesn't like it. And proudly announced to the world media many years ago that he doesn't like it, he wouldn't eat it and that was that.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Millions of kids probably cheered around the world. And parents, nutritionists and vegetable-lovers were deflated.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Most of us were fairly confident of broccoli's super-health powers, however recent research published in the <i>American Journal of Hypertension</i> has added even more punch to broccoli's clout.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A compound produced in broccoli (and some other cruciferous veggies like cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, rocket and horseradish) called <b>s<i>ulforaphane</i></b> significantly improves blood pressure and kidney function. This compound is highest in broccoli sprouts!</span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>Sulphoraphane</i> has also been shown to have antidiabetic and antimicrobial properties. But most impressive and perhaps even awe-inspiring, is that it <i>kills cancer stem cells and slows tumour growth</i>. Researchers believe that eliminating cancer stem cells may be the key to controlling cancer. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How cool is that? More evidence to suggest that a diet high in green veggies will help protect you from many Western diseases. Hippocrates wasn't wrong when he said "Let food by thy medicine and medicine your food." At least one world leader had it right!</span></div>

Twitter is great, when you make it work for you.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFR8QHFZFhJveMhQ4Kp0wF4XLWE3kTeG7MMsOwNrnwXILcqzGaTtNL0JaYr54eIRTAhJA3O4Xu4cq8wpMaqdXWQ84xDbEMMYGf__taroVQESps-hUTwjvUdgFXbLCPH0dmMVxOI-3_5s7M/s1600/IMG_7332.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFR8QHFZFhJveMhQ4Kp0wF4XLWE3kTeG7MMsOwNrnwXILcqzGaTtNL0JaYr54eIRTAhJA3O4Xu4cq8wpMaqdXWQ84xDbEMMYGf__taroVQESps-hUTwjvUdgFXbLCPH0dmMVxOI-3_5s7M/s320/IMG_7332.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I can't remember how I first stumbled on this raw, vegan chocolate recipe, or that such a beast even existed, but the ultimate result is that after following some fabulous raw foodies on Twitter, I found myself ogling this raw, vegan chocolate recipe and busting to try it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now: a note to self (that is, yourself): this might take you several attempts to perfect the recipe. I think I'm up to version #10, but I've finally found a recipe that works for me that I'm happy with. Let me tell you, trialling 10 batches of chocolate is tough work, but someone's gotta do it :-)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The issue in perfecting this chocolate really lies in the type of sweetener you use and how much you use of it. What I found is that as soon as the sweetener is added, the mixture thickens considerably, sometimes making it hard to work with and a bit too stiff to easily pour into the moulds. And when you pop the set chocolates out of the moulds when they're set, they're not shiny happy chockies either.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am sure there is a lot of science around chocolate making. In fact, I KNOW there is a lot of science around chocolate: there is tampering and working it and blah blah blah. This recipe is not designed for the serious chocolate aficionado. This is just for someone like me with a sweet tooth that wants to eat the healthier version of a wicked treat.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So how is it healthier, I hear you ask? Raw cacao is the least processed version of cocoa and therefore still retains all of its lovely nutrients. Recent studies have shown that raw cacao contain very high levels of antioxidants, magnesium and Vitamin C. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTSKwRixk1cMWip0sviGQoKmkMpFTqoZn0Ikv0tQ_tNXCSfBtnzG1jfFFvMqeAWU7ip2coeWOwwJNLEtEkMQloWwja9-YgrQFu8RL05I9_oqzo9mF7vKgq0I8ofp-deRkb0qrqfZvUuWUd/s1600/IMG_7324.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTSKwRixk1cMWip0sviGQoKmkMpFTqoZn0Ikv0tQ_tNXCSfBtnzG1jfFFvMqeAWU7ip2coeWOwwJNLEtEkMQloWwja9-YgrQFu8RL05I9_oqzo9mF7vKgq0I8ofp-deRkb0qrqfZvUuWUd/s320/IMG_7324.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Coconut oil is one of my favourite all time foods/remedies on the planet and could have its own blog post, hell it could have it's own book, it's so good. I lather it all over my body. I make home-made deodorant with it (yes, its true and most of the time I smell like lemon cheescake and I feel like licking my armpits). But I digress. Coconut oil improves heart health, increases metabolism and boosts the immune system.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy8no9jYifCoWAk-TcYAIuojJdCHG73aqAB-Zf2ikyB4skwEBpat6L6pCoYJwF1rFDM44L_wsqN4sQD-755o911o1Liz59e6O6RE6OKleubVNQhFf_09vJFOfJ9LdKbfel1toeLe91GjLn/s1600/IMG_7325.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy8no9jYifCoWAk-TcYAIuojJdCHG73aqAB-Zf2ikyB4skwEBpat6L6pCoYJwF1rFDM44L_wsqN4sQD-755o911o1Liz59e6O6RE6OKleubVNQhFf_09vJFOfJ9LdKbfel1toeLe91GjLn/s320/IMG_7325.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These 2 ingredient alone are reason enough to eat chocolate. But we all know that raw cacao or cocoa aren't sweet, so we need to sweeten the mixture. This is where the health benefits get tricky, because if you chow down on too many of these chocolates, you'll still be consuming a lot of sugar. The trick is to just have one or two a day. The good news is that this chocolate is quite rich, so you may find it more difficult to pig out and eat the whole batch in one go (and if you do: sheesh..... slow down!)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So let's talk about stevia, a natural sugar replacement that doesn't spike insulin levels. I don't like it. Not one little bit. When I added it to my lovely, chocolatey, velvety liquid it turned it all thick and gritty and made me pull at cat's bum face. There is no room for a cat's bum face where my cooking is concerned. But if you like it, go crazy and add it. I decided on a half-half addition of raw organic agave and raw organic coconut syrup (which will give the chocolate a slight chewy consistency).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinMzoQwj04U83hlAFQIA9kbevKmImeSOUE4_4i1rl9gCRoFM-09YB7eLGkVcmG1kAl0wNAiStvn8M1_5vvJPutNuq1bcvdJcBmBT2NmBQqWhf79kv7jAZwLujDpGuoeqTib_9MAFHLxCKN/s1600/IMG_7328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinMzoQwj04U83hlAFQIA9kbevKmImeSOUE4_4i1rl9gCRoFM-09YB7eLGkVcmG1kAl0wNAiStvn8M1_5vvJPutNuq1bcvdJcBmBT2NmBQqWhf79kv7jAZwLujDpGuoeqTib_9MAFHLxCKN/s320/IMG_7328.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The original recipe made only half the amount of chocolate, but my family (ahem, me) all devour it so quickly that I always double the recipe. Sometimes I use half the mixture for chocolate in moulds and pour the other half over goji berries and organic dessicated coconut on a metal tray. Mmmm.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Ingredients</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/2 cup coconut oil</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 1/3 cup raw cacao, sifted</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3-4 tablespoons organic dark agave syrup</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3-4 tablespoons organic coconut syrup</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Peppermint oil/orange oil if you like</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Method</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Gently melt coconut oil over a low heat until just melted and turn off heat immediately. Stir in sifted cacao and mix well. Add sweeteners and stir. The mixture will thicken but should still be liquid enough to pour into the silicon moulds with a couple of teaspoons.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />Does this sound familiar? You watch a gardening show on TV. You feel a rush of inspiration to create your own living sanctuary and within days you find yourself at your nearest nursery procuring some seeds and plant them in the garden or on your balcony in pots.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And then......</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Those of us with 'black thumbs' remember to check the new garden when we need some coriander for that Thai curry for dinner, only to discover a wasteland where once a herb garden once stood. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you're keen to start a garden, learn from the mistakes of others (like me) try these tips for growing a successful herb garden or balcony garden:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Start with a site assessment. Is it sunny? What do you want to grow: Herbs? Tomatoes? Flowers? Do some thinking before you start digging or buying seeds or seedlings.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Work with what you've got - enhance what you love or hide what you don't like. Ugly fence? Use bamboo fencing. It's cheap and hides things well. Bamboo in pots also hides ugly unattractive walls or neighbours' windows and provides a lovely "green screen"</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Keep it simple. Don't try to grow every vegetable you love. Do a bit of research on what grows well in your area/soil/terrain and work with what you have. If you have a shady area and you live in Sydney, your tropical frangipani tree probably won't be very happy.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you're unsure of how things will grow, try planting hardy herbs such as Thai coriander, garlic chives etc.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you have a balcony, think about the weight of lots of heavy pots. Use plastic instead but make sure you have good drainage.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Use mulch! It keeps moisture in. Or one canny trick we've seen is to use pebble tiles attached to mesh. Pop them on top of your pots to </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And don't forget to water, especially if your plants are in pots. They dry out really quickly and need TLC especially as the weather warms up.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Use your vertical space. Fences, balcony walls are all waiting for some living things on it. Use shelves, hooks etc to make things grow upwards. Unless you've just spent $100k on a sandstone fence or travertine tiled wall, in which case you should just make time to stare at it. A lot.</span></li>

Did you know that macadamia nut oil has one of the highest smoke points of any oil (210 C) so is excellent to cook with because it won't change the structure of the oil? So ditch the extra virgin olive oil (which shouldn't go above 160 C) and use some extra virgin, organic macadamia nut oil instead. It's also great for your skin, just use a small amount after a shower or bath when the skins is still a little wet. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi00r6Mul4E_zMOup0d-S3q5atDU6U0BLUT4VEPnH0Ifglzp5YRJ7UC1pQqaDWwRxxEcVBFwJaabUQ1kMkV9pIZLvTNGeL57Gegc-VdZQu2JZrZMTEZQVZqGtKx11dvPCDC2es0cN9WdUyn/s1600/strawberries.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi00r6Mul4E_zMOup0d-S3q5atDU6U0BLUT4VEPnH0Ifglzp5YRJ7UC1pQqaDWwRxxEcVBFwJaabUQ1kMkV9pIZLvTNGeL57Gegc-VdZQu2JZrZMTEZQVZqGtKx11dvPCDC2es0cN9WdUyn/s320/strawberries.jpeg" width="255" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Did you know.... that strawberries are part of the rose family? That would explain the heady sensation and sudden rush of romance associated with eating strawberries. No? Well perhaps its the anthocyanins doing their zesty work inside your body. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Antho....what?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Anthocyanins are water soluble pigments that give strawberries their lusty red colouring. Not only do they make strawberries <i>look oh-so-good</i> to eat, but these funky colours also perform an impressive double-act as free-radical fighting antioxidants, which means they're awesome at preventing cancer, aging, inflammation and neurological diseases.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The humble strawberry also contains a truckload of vitamin C, which we all know keeps our immune system in tip-top shape and helps to combat colds, flus and scurvy ;-)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px;">And these luscious lip-smackers also contain potassium (good for a steady heart rate and blood pressure), fluoride (for skin, bones and teeth), copper (needed for red blood cells production and iron (blood cell formation)</span><span style="background-color: white; font-style: italic; line-height: 16px;">. Ker-pow!</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px;">But the best thing about strawberries? They taste ah-mayzing!! In a juice (try it), fruit salad, with cream, in many a dessert or just on their Pat Malone, strawberries are one of the true delights of spring time. Even better, they're very low in calories too, so you can pretty much feast on them at any time of day with a clear conscience. And possibly clear skin too.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><b>Camilleri Berries</b> are at the<b> Lane Cove Public School Food & Farmers' Markets</b> every Sunday and sell strawberries and other berries (such as blueberries, raspberries and blackberries) when in season.</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><b>Rita's Farm Produce</b> also sells a limited amount of strawberries at the <b>Bondi Junction Village Markets</b> when in season.</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><br /></i></span>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><b>Yuri Hulak, from Orange, apple grower</b></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We're going to declare September "talk to a farmer" month and challenge all our readers to talk to the farmers at our markets and learn one new thing. We'd be interested in what you learn!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the best things about shopping at a farmers' market is not only buying the freshest produce, but talking to the person who grew or reared the food. Through one simple conversation you might find that last Saturday morning the farms experienced incredible frost, unlike any beginning to spring that they'd seen.... </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Or that heirloom green tomatoes actually are sweet and juicy, not unripe (which is how they look to an untrained, non-heirloom tomato buying set of eyes like mine) and just PERFECTION in a salad... </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB83pOKd6NXLCjQ4wQP3aJUCbT-E0AhIL50jDKtgqz5yEEgFcmN8mEXXSvkJ0ySYOQOsIQU6MkOP-PreBPUfqpp-LUktBE-BGWjM_1P2ZGSk5nzKK3N3Gp0xQ2HrAw2b6kHOs8-gPi6zCY/s1600/green+tomatoes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB83pOKd6NXLCjQ4wQP3aJUCbT-E0AhIL50jDKtgqz5yEEgFcmN8mEXXSvkJ0ySYOQOsIQU6MkOP-PreBPUfqpp-LUktBE-BGWjM_1P2ZGSk5nzKK3N3Gp0xQ2HrAw2b6kHOs8-gPi6zCY/s320/green+tomatoes.jpg" width="237" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Or that Monsanto are buying up all the seed companies and often sell their seeds for $1.50 each. $1.50 for one seed??????????</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Or that chickens LOVE eating pumpkin and go a bit crazy for the stuff....</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Or that if apples get frost on them their sugar is concentrated in the frosted areas and they're actually sweeter....</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv60yKoVbhHPW-YTemNfzP2DwvAOFebrkBU57sVn00ihm6morFDyr-_ryEVCIl4wlzLenjTZpVmX2baQGXQYrCPVECdqTfneK6TRQZZTgm1EjxZSa5DRrjN3OqbJKyTWWo6AX1yegCp05P/s1600/Frozen-Apples.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv60yKoVbhHPW-YTemNfzP2DwvAOFebrkBU57sVn00ihm6morFDyr-_ryEVCIl4wlzLenjTZpVmX2baQGXQYrCPVECdqTfneK6TRQZZTgm1EjxZSa5DRrjN3OqbJKyTWWo6AX1yegCp05P/s320/Frozen-Apples.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is just the tip of the iceberg. We'd love to hear your stories, tips, tricks, recipes or tid-bits of information that you learned by talking to a farmer, that you otherwise wouldn't have known.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

The delightful Haile has been coming to the Bondi Junction Village Markets for 2 years now and has a very loyal following of customers who, at some stage of their lunching careers, parachuted out of their culinary comfort zone and gave Ethiopian food a try.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Haile cooks a selection of curries or <i>wats (pronounced wots) </i>which feature either lentils, chicken or beef. These aromatic dishes are then paired with a traditional Ethiopian sourdough flat bread known as<i> injera</i>, which is made from a fermented type of flour called teff. The bread is quite sour but is perfect with the spiciness of the wats. If sourdough isn't your thing, you can request rice as your accompaniment.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is about as unprocessed as you get. Fermented bread, curries made from scratch full of lentils and veggies or protein like chicken or beef = a midday taste sensation. There is a reason Haile has eager lunchtime groupies queueing for his tasty food. </span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You can even drop by at the end of each market day. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Spinach is thought to have originated in ancient Persia; Arab traders then carried spinach into India, and the plant was then introduced into ancient China, where it was known as "Persian vegetable". The earliest available record of the spinach plant was recorded in Chinese.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Spinach first appeared in England and France in the 14th century, probably via Spain, and it gained quick popularity because it appeared in early spring, when other vegetables were scarce. In 1533 Catherine de Medici became queen of France and she loved spinach so much that she insisted it be served at every meal. To this day, dishes made with spinach are known as "Florentine", reflecting Catherine's birth in Florence.<br /><br />During World War I, wine fortified with spinach juice was given to French soldiers weakened by hemorrhage. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The cartoon character Popeye ate a lot of spinach, which purportedly made him stronger. It is said that the reason for his affinity with spinach was based on faulty calculations of the iron content in spinach. Apparently a misplaced a decimal point in an 1870 measurement of spinach's iron content led to an iron value 10 times higher than it should have been and this faulty measurement wasn't noticed until the 1930s. <br /><br />Our favourite way of eating spinach is quickly flash fried with a tiny bit of oil, garlic and good quality salt and pepper. For breakfast with eggs or dinner with any dish, spinach is a super-hero veggie.</span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBVMTLFmWC2F_dftdmyS0wjyKltZjaxDGNUcKaNoc4w0cfxOHByYkRknu-0leoz6wrB6Rmyl-zYXHdzglZ7OLvDJzGwDKIv6W7vHQECHpfquhjmu-0IdQR618E6ySgeFPJIxmBGBX0tndH/s1600/Anzac4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBVMTLFmWC2F_dftdmyS0wjyKltZjaxDGNUcKaNoc4w0cfxOHByYkRknu-0leoz6wrB6Rmyl-zYXHdzglZ7OLvDJzGwDKIv6W7vHQECHpfquhjmu-0IdQR618E6ySgeFPJIxmBGBX0tndH/s320/Anzac4.jpg" width="237" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I wasn't going to make Anzac biscuits this year as I'm moving away from a lot of sugary baking and investigating healthier options. However when Teresa Cutter's "Paleo Anzacs" popped into my email inbox I wanted to give them a try. You can find her original recipe <a href="http://www.teresacutter.com/2012/04/paleo-anzacs/" target="_blank">here</a> (and check out her blog, it's fantastic!)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These are gluten free and delicious. Teresa's recipe calls for honey instead of golden syrup. I agonised over this for a minute or two; however knowing that when honey is heated it loses its health benefits, I decided to dive in with golden syrup instead just for a more traditional taste.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Also: I highly recommend using a less flavoursome oil than olive oil in the recipe. Macadamia oil might be a better option if you don't want the bikkies reminding you of pasta.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tweaking aside, these bickies rock and if "I won't eat anything remotely healthy" Mr will eat them, well, that says it all, really.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<b><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Gluten-free Anzac biscuits</span></b><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 cup (100 g) almond meal (ground almonds)</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 cup (100 g) flaked almonds</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 cup (75 g) desiccated coconut</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/4 (80 g) cup honey or golden syrup</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/4 cup (60 ml) macadamia nut, almond or olive oil (i don't recommend olive oil)</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 tablespoon water</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I do love a corn fritter and when I recently visited a lovely cafe and my friend ordered pumpkin & corn fritters for breakfast, I immediately had food envy. Fritters are a perfect Meatless Monday meal as they're satisfying and delicious. Meat eaters won't even realise that meat is missing!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Middle Eastern Pumpkin & Corn Fritters</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />1 cup fresh corn1/2 cooked butternut pumpkin (or more if you like your pumpkin)<br />200g spelt flour<br />1 teaspoon bi-carbonate soda<br />1 teaspoon sweet paprika<br />1 teaspoon salt<br />1/2 teaspoon ground tumeric<br />1 teaspoon ground cumin<br />Pinch cayenne pepper<br />Freshly ground pepper<br />250ml milk of any kind (almond milk works well for vegans)<br />Olive oil for frying </span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /><b>Method</b><br /><br />In large bowl place flour, bi-carbonate soda and spices. Isn't that pretty?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgygmK2SOkGgsE4yAxQs-QZ9GFeLGqe_3U2EYA-A0XA7TEK1DxmfPYx1xuEHCFP6MZJlH8M5ztXOpHFSeBcXWrzp3PbI-TYLAmIc4xX8-q7xS2GQ2YbGmIphYKl0PGV4C4jAFP7TaVE6oeq/s1600/Blog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgygmK2SOkGgsE4yAxQs-QZ9GFeLGqe_3U2EYA-A0XA7TEK1DxmfPYx1xuEHCFP6MZJlH8M5ztXOpHFSeBcXWrzp3PbI-TYLAmIc4xX8-q7xS2GQ2YbGmIphYKl0PGV4C4jAFP7TaVE6oeq/s320/Blog2.jpg" width="254" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Make a well in the flour and spice mix and slowly add milk. Whisk until you have a smooth batter. </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Add the pumpkin and corn and add to the batter mixture.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Heat olive oil in a large frying pan. Place a tablespoon of the fritter mixture into the frying pan and cook on medium to high heat on each side (3-4 minutes) until golden and crispy. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I served with a minted yoghurt (organic greek yogurt and chopped mint leaves); vegans can leave that out and serve with a tomato chutney or avocado salsa which would be equally delicious.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I also served with my fab raw zucchini salad. <br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Pathetically, I love a kitchen gadget. Whilst those around me are trying to de-clutter their lives, I seem to be filling mine with more and more kitchen appliances and gadgets. This fabby veggie spiraler is great for turning zucchini and carrots into noodles and lots of raw foodies swear by them. So, as I'm eating a lot more raw and vegan food, of course I had to get one!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Zucchini salad with lemon, caperberries and pumpkin seeds</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2 raw zucchini, spiraled into noodles (or you could grate them)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Juice of one lemon</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3 tablespoons caperberries, cut into halves or quarters</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">handful of pumpkin seeds</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/2 bunch of parsley, chopped</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Voile!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Non-vegans can add shaved reggiano or similar cheese. I also roasted my pumpkin seeds (don't throw them away! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Bisphenol A, or BPA as it is commonly known, is a harmless seeming but nasty little plastic that seems to be in almost everything. My blog post on its effects on humans and its prevalence in canned foods can be found <a href="http://yourlocalmarkets.blogspot.com.au/2012/03/cutting-out-crap-dreaded-bpa.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So I won't go on any more about how evil it is. Take my word for it or type "BPA health concerns" into your favourite search engine and that will have you reading, and weeping, for hours.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was the concern over BPA contained in drink bottles, particularly baby bottles, and its links to serious health issues which had plastic manufacturers racing to eliminate it from their products. Now, thankfully, baby bottles, drink bottles, lunch boxes and most plastic food containers are labelled "BPA free". </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have been living under a rock for a few years so this one passed me by. Better late than never I guess!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So I decided to clean out the pantry; clean out the plastics cupboard; clean out my life.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Will your kitchen cupboard pass the BPA test? My advice is, unless you're sure your plastic containers <b><i>are</i></b> BPA free and you remember seeing the little sticker on it that read "No BPA", if they're a few years old or you bought them from a $2 shop, you might want to turf them and buy new ones. It might cost you $60 to buy ones that are all shiny and new and <b><i>stackable</i></b>, however the $60 will be well worth it, especially when BPA has been linked to cancer. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Unfortunately there is no mandatory labelling of BPA in plastics and from what I have read, there isn't agreement on which numbered plastics contain it. For example, Wikipedia says that plastics with the recycling numer 1, 2, 4, 5 & 6 are unlikely to contain it, but 7 is a catch all "other" so it could contain BPA. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">However another site says that 2, 4, 5 & 7 are safe. All agree that </span><b style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3 definitely contains BPA.</b><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">However the Decor <a href="http://www.decor.com.au/customerservice/bpainformation.aspx" target="_blank">website</a> says that the recycling number does not indicate whether BPA is in a plastic product or not. So I recommend only buying and using plastic containers that are labelled "BPA free".</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I used this education as an opportunity to tidy my plastics cupboard which had been a disaster for years. I didn't matter how often I tidied it, a little house fairy would come along and destroy all order. Now my containers are shiny and new and <b><i>stackable</i></b>.<br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLv3mY_thmeJNtdEyhjv47Nxb1jzXLtajD-AfzUkbpHlrZgZBfJkaBrJzDWgUTGmJ1kb-FG_C0zUKiWtCZi02PtjQc6szyl-_O-sHZtP-drBSxn6Q0GPwnIqiceJFDMEBO4rs173CQWPur/s1600/bpa-free.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLv3mY_thmeJNtdEyhjv47Nxb1jzXLtajD-AfzUkbpHlrZgZBfJkaBrJzDWgUTGmJ1kb-FG_C0zUKiWtCZi02PtjQc6szyl-_O-sHZtP-drBSxn6Q0GPwnIqiceJFDMEBO4rs173CQWPur/s320/bpa-free.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I turfed the take away containers. Don't keep them as they probably contain BPA too. You might even want to reconsider even buying your food in these things, but that opens up a whole minefield too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I also turfed the plastic rice cooker; the plastic microwave steamers; all the random bowls and containers I'd managed to accumulate over the years.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Frankly, I'm a little suspicious of most plastic containers now, since harmful chemicals can leach into the food, especially when heated. I never heat plastic containers with food in them. if you want to reheat frozen food, tet the food sit for as long as you can remove it from the plastic and put it into crockery or glass.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And I never put hot food into plastic containers (say, before freezing). I always let cool first and then freeze. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Same with zip lock bags. I did email Glad last week about their products and they responded that no Glad products contain BPA, which is a relief, however I think it is good practice just not to heat plastic containing food at all, because phthalates can also leach into food when heated.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Good Housekeeping conducted a test on plastic containers and whether any BPA leached into food and the results are <a href="http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-reviews/consumer-protection/plastic-safety-heat-food-6" target="_blank">here</a>. Although some Glad products (from the US) showed they had BPA in them, I reiterate that Glad confirmed that none of their products in Australia contain BPA.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Great alternative containers for microwaving and heating food are Pyrex. I've had 2 Pyrex bowls for a zillion years and they just keep on going. They now also make containers with funky plastic lids so you can cook, freeze and microwave food in them. Again, I always remove the plastic lid but otherwise they're a good solution.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Decor also produce a good glass container with a BPA-free plastic lid.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Or go retro: bring out the crock pot, the corning ware, and marvel how some things really were better before innovation ;-)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />

</div><b style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">BPA</b><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'd seen the stickers on kids' lunch boxes and drink bottles which read "Does not contain BPA" but not really understood what BPA was or why it shouldn't be in plastics and why we need to avoid it. I'd clearly missed the whole BPA news item boat. Bad mother.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">However, recently I read an article from one of my food-related email alerts, and in the article it mentioned that BPA, a type of plastic, had been linked not only to cancer but heart disease in otherwise healthy people.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Danger, Will Robinson. What was this BPA and was it in my house? My food? My body?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Luckily, when I tweeted about the article, the very helpful and well-informed Lesh from </span><a href="https://twitter.com/#!/mindfulfoodie" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" target="_blank">@mindfulfoodie</a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> sent me a link to an article she'd written on her blog about BPA, where it was found and how to best eliminate it from your environment as much as possible.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Read her great article </span><a href="http://themindfulfoodie.com/2011/08/26/bisphenol-a-bpa-what-is-it-how-to-avoid-it-in-your-food/" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" target="_blank">here</a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After I read it, I must confess I felt pretty ignorant and also a little alarmed. However, as Lesh says, <i>no point in getting worried: get informed and take action</i>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I guess the most enlightening aspect of the article was finding out that (with a few, small notable exceptions) all canned foods are in cans lined with BPA! I can't understand why we'd be concerned about buying lunch boxes and drink bottles without BPA but </span><b style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i>not</i></b><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> be concerned about our cans of food being lined with BPA?!?!? Food that can sit on a shelf for 12-18 months?</span><br />
<b style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</b><br />
<b style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So what is BPA?</b><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">BPA, or Bisphenol A is a colourless solid that is used to make polycarbonate plastics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The reason why BPA is so bad for humans is because it is a known </span><i style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">endocrine disruptor</i><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">. The endocrine system in humans and animals contains glands that secrete hormones into the bloodstream to regulate the body. Endocrine disruptors either mimic hormones or disrupt their function in the body and even in very low levels, can have detrimental effects on humans. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">These disruptions can cause cancerous tumours, birth defects and other developmental disorders, in particular, learning disabilities, severe ADHD and autism, cognitive and brain development problems, deformations of the body (including limbs), early puberty and fertility problems. Any system in the body controlled by hormones can be derailed by hormone disruptors.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">BPA itself exerts a weak, yet detectable chemical that mimics estrogen in the body.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In 2008 health concerns were raised about BPA being used in food containers and many manufacturers began voluntarily removing it from production. It is banned as a toxic substance in some countries, but yet it still lines much of our canned food.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<b style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's in all my canned food?</b><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><br />
</b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivVoNy84KmhngeMVMf9SswJY13lFfG_VS5U1hdHTBx1_EdOjYnozUTlfkjECiiZ5s-FQFoOnNyC8eGGTrcg8FxNsiuUzKOWA1aajVo892fSE50qoZ_jgkaONQ2NnypRlmYbYjQWUYCPsvB/s1600/BPA3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivVoNy84KmhngeMVMf9SswJY13lFfG_VS5U1hdHTBx1_EdOjYnozUTlfkjECiiZ5s-FQFoOnNyC8eGGTrcg8FxNsiuUzKOWA1aajVo892fSE50qoZ_jgkaONQ2NnypRlmYbYjQWUYCPsvB/s320/BPA3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well, yes, most of it, especially the large commercial brands. I recently emailed Heinz to ask if all of its brands' (Heinz, Watties, Weight Watchers, Greenseas, Cottees, Golden Circle, Original Juice Co) canned foods were lined with BPA. I received a fairly irritating response, saying that they needed more information, giving me a 1800 number to call and quoting a reference number. I wasn't impressed, because surely they have this information that they could email to me. Either all their cans were lined with BPA, or some weren't and they could let me know which ones were not. Pretty simple I thought.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I also emailed Edgell. Their response was far more transparent and helpful. They confirmed that their canned foods were lined with BPA but that:</span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"actions have been underway for some time to find alternatives that will enable BPA to be phased out from our canned food products."</span></blockquote><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Edgell also referred me to Food Standards Australia <a href="http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/consumerinformation/bisphenolabpa/" target="_blank">statement</a> on BPA which states that the current tolerant daily intake (TDI) level of BPA "represents no significant risk to human health."</span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></span></div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Much more helpful. But not the answer I wanted.<br />
</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">More recently, studies have been calling into question the TDI of BPA, suggesting that even at very low levels, it may be responsible for disease.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A new study published on 14 March 2012 (5 days ago), conducted over 3 years by 12 scientists, has stated that:</span><br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"There truly are no safe doses for chemicals that act like hormones, because the endocrine system is designed to act at very low levels.”</span></blockquote><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The report cites an interesting comparison:</span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"The breast cancer drug tamoxifen provides an excellent example for how high-dose testing cannot be used to predict the effects of low doses. At low doses, it stimulates breast cancer growth. At higher ones, it inhibits it."</span></blockquote><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Read the full study <a href="http://edrv.endojournals.org/content/early/2012/03/14/er.2011-1050.full.pdf+html" target="_blank">here</a> or a summary <a href="http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ehs/news/2012/low-doses-big-effects" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We don't eat a lot of canned food in our house, but I realised we rely on certain items quite heavily. I immediately went straight to the pantry and removed all the canned products. Canned corn kernels, tuna, beetroot, legumes (oh the legumes!), coconut milk, baby corn, etc. Goneski. I had been buying passata in glass bottles for a while as I'd read something a while ago about canned tomatoes but couldn't remember what the issue was (!?!). However it should be noted that the lids of glass bottles and jars are also lined with BPA.</span><br />
<div><br />
</div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Lesh had mentioned on Twitter that <a href="http://www.spiralfoods.com.au/" target="_blank">Spiral Foods</a> don't line their cans of tinned tomatoes with BPA. I found Spiral Foods in my local health food store and saw their branded coconut cream also. I bought a few cans of the coconut cream and when I returned home, couldn't find any information on their website about BPA and coconut cream (and assumed the worst). By email, Spiral Organics confirmed neither their coconut milk nor coconut cream were in tins lined with BPA. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOzDg8IBlC-buq5gLJr-Ad-l2RJrD3c5GJmosCJPKO4h7G3DLoE8zbgJflljgOpM0ETjpPEuJVnpgeypIJal4vB20bFxaoLWCAOtK_cSEuhl9kbeLokAYFXrxspscLhtxCRRoonxMj87Do/s1600/spiralcoconutcream.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOzDg8IBlC-buq5gLJr-Ad-l2RJrD3c5GJmosCJPKO4h7G3DLoE8zbgJflljgOpM0ETjpPEuJVnpgeypIJal4vB20bFxaoLWCAOtK_cSEuhl9kbeLokAYFXrxspscLhtxCRRoonxMj87Do/s320/spiralcoconutcream.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A big <b>HIP HIP HOORAH</b> for Spiral Foods!!!! I am now (of course) a massive advocate for Spiral Foods and will be buying all my canned tomatoes and coconut cream from Spiral. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Ok, so which brands <i>DON'T</i> use BPA?</b></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have limited information about brands who do not use BPA, however here are a couple, courtesy of </span><a href="http://www.treehugger.com/green-food/7-companies-you-can-trust-to-use-bpa-free-cans.html" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank">Treehugger</a><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, via Mindful Foodie:</span></div><div><ul><li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.spiralfoods.com.au/" target="_blank">Spiral Foods:</a> tinned whole tomatoes, diced tomatoes, coconut milk & coconut cream;</span></li>
<li><a href="http://www.spiralfoods.com.au/category/45" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank">Eden Organic</a><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> (distributed by Spiral Foods and available in good health food stores) - legumes, beans etc</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.vitalchoice.com.au/" target="_blank">Vital Choice</a> - tinned, sustainable (wild caught) seafood: salmon & sardines only </span></li>
</ul><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There was an issue with minute, detectable amounts of BPA in Vital Choice their tuna. I contacted Vital Choice regarding the findings. Vital Choice responded to me quickly and thoroughly, stating that as a result of the study, much testing had been done to find the source of the BPA contamination. The source was not found however it has made Vital Choice more vigilant and all its suppliers are required to certify that they are BPA free. Read about the study which found detectable amounts, possibly from the can lids </span><a href="http://www.consumersunion.org/pub/core_food_safety/015283.html" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank">here</a>.<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> And read an article in the Washington Post about it <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/22/AR2010022204830.html?hpid=topnews">here</a>; and Vital Choice's response <a href="http://www.vitalchoice.com/shop/pc/articlesView.asp?id=928">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Personally, I'll be buying supporting Vital Choice and buying their seafood.</span></div><div><br />
</div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you know of any other companies who sell canned foods which aren't lined with BPA I'd love to hear from you. And let's give them a massive plug so that their efforts can be rewarded.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>More about endocrine disruptors</b></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Unfortunately, there are many more endocrine disruptors in our environment apart from BPA. Other notable endocrine disruptors include:</span></div><div><ul><li><b style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">parabens</b><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> (found in shampoos, moisturisers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, makeup, toothpaste and food additives) which have been found in some breast cancer tumors;</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Phthalates </b><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(found in</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> tubing, vinyl flooring, glues, inks, pesticides, detergents, plastic bags, food packaging, children’s toys, shower curtains, soaps, shampoos, perfumes, hair spray and nail polish);</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Pesticides and herbicides</b><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">; and</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Heavy metals</b><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> (to name a few)</span><b style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">.</b></li>
</ul></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A helpful list of common endocrine disruptors is listed <a href="http://www.womentowomen.com/detoxification/endocrinedisruptors-page3.aspx" target="_blank">here</a>.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Boy, am I glad I have decided to cut the crap out of my life. Little did I know why, it just seemed to make sense. However now I <b><i>really</i></b> know I'm on the right track.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With new research emerging on a regular basis about the harmful effects of endocrine disruptors on humans (and indeed other animals), I am going to do my utmost to eliminate them from my environment as much as possible. Unfortunately their effects can be long term and I hope and pray that my prior exposure to them won't harm myself or my children in future, however I know now that knowledge is power, and I will do everything in my power to cut that crap right outta my life!!</span></div>Your Local Marketshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16430960250389947289noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565887263191578181.post-38804332254495762162012-03-17T16:33:00.001+11:002012-03-17T16:33:37.233+11:00Healthy Jaffa Bombshttp://yourlocalmarkets.blogspot.com.au/2010/10/back-in-kitchen-healthy-jaffa-bombs.htmlYour Local Marketshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16430960250389947289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565887263191578181.post-546727965033692902012-03-17T16:28:00.001+11:002012-04-28T18:49:29.180+10:00Raw choco coconut amaze balls<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

Related to their cousins, the <a href="http://yourlocalmarkets.blogspot.com.au/2010/10/back-in-kitchen-healthy-jaffa-bombs.html" target="_blank">Healthy Jaffa Bombs</a>, these little raw choc bundles of deliciousness are perhaps even easier to make. Because we forgot about the sultanas.</div>

Pit 10 dates and place in food processor. Add cocoa and blend into a thick goey paste. Add the creamed coconut and if the mixture is a bit dry, add a small slurp of filtered water. Not too much water as the mixture will become too sticky.<br />
